Last MacBook Pro with optical drive added to Apple's 'obsolete' list

Apple will add the mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro to its list of "obsolete products" on January 31, according to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors. Released in June 2012, this 13-inch MacBook Pro model was the last Mac Apple sold with a built-in CD/DVD drive, featuring an 8x SuperDrive . Until October 2016, it was still sold as a lower-priced option alongside the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Apple believes that more than five years have passed since it stopped selling the device. Obsolete products were previously ineligible for repairs in most regions, but Apple Retail Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers now offer repairs for obsolete products for up to seven years, depending on the availability of parts.

On the software side, Apple dropped support for macOS Big Sur on the mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2020.
