Meta claims its new AI supercomputer will be the fastest in the world

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, said its research team has developed a new artificial intelligence supercomputer that is said to be the fastest in the world when completed in mid-2022. Meta says the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) computer will help the company build better AI models that can learn from trillions of examples, work in hundreds of languages, and analyze text, images, and videos together to determine if the content is harmful.

“This research will help keep people safe when using our services, not only today but also in the future, as we create a metaverse,” the company said in a statement.

Last October, the social media giant changed its name to Meta to reflect its focus on the metaverse it believes will be the successor to the mobile internet. The term "metaverse" refers to the idea of shared virtual environments that people can access from different devices and where they can work, play and communicate. Experts from Nvidia, Pure Storage, and Penguin Computing took part in the development of the RSC.
