China: 677,000 new 5G base stations will be built from January to August 2022

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of the end of August, the total number of 5G base stations reached 2.102 million, accounting for 19.8% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 5.5 percentage points from the end of the previous year. Among them, 677,000 new 5G base stations were built from January to August this year.

In September of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that the world's largest optical fiber and the mobile broadband network has been built, the optical fiber transformation has been fully completed, the 4G network covers urban and rural areas, and the 5G network is developing rapidly. The five top-level nodes for industrial Internet identification analysis are running stably, and the second-level nodes cover 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities). The country has achieved "broadband access to every village", "5G access to counties and counties" and "gigabit access to cities and cities".

The person in charge of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology previously stated that during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the average annual decrease in comprehensive energy consumption per unit of telecommunications business volume will exceed 20%. At present, the energy consumption per site of 5G base stations has been reduced by more than 20% compared with the initial stage of commercial use, and the average design PUE (power utilization efficiency) of large-scale data centers planned and under construction nationwide has dropped below 1.3. It is necessary to comprehensively carry out optical fiber transformation of the network, publish a catalog of old and high-energy-consuming obsolete equipment in the industry and a catalog of new energy-saving technologies, and steadily promote network upgrades. Continue to promote the co-construction and sharing of communication infrastructure in scenarios such as base station computer rooms, pipeline lines, and smart towers, and improve the green level of network construction, operation and maintenance.
