NVIDIA introduces DLSS 3 technology

NVIDIA officially released DLSS 3 technology, which will debut on October 12 with the launch of the GeForce RTX 4090 GPU.

Officially, DLSS 3 is an AI-powered performance multiplier that opens up a new era of NVIDIA RTX neural network rendering for games and applications.

Powered by the new 4th Gen Tensor Cores and new optical flow accelerators on GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs, DLSS 3 is the latest version of NVIDIA's acclaimed deep learning supersampling technology and features groundbreaking optical multi-frame generation.

Optical multi-frame generation technology generates completely new frames, not just pixels, resulting in an amazing performance boost. A new optical flow accelerator based on NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture analyzes two consecutive frames of game images and computes motion vector data for objects and elements from frame to frame, rather than modeling them with the motion vectors of traditional game engines. This greatly reduces AI visual anomalies when rendering elements such as particles, reflections, shadows, and lighting.

By synthesizing a pair of super-resolution frames in the game, along with the engine and optical flow motion vectors, and feeding them into a convolutional neural network, a new frame can be computed, a first for real-time game rendering. Combining brand new frames generated by DLSS with DLSS Super Resolution frames enables DLSS 3 to use AI to reconstruct seven out of eight display pixels, delivering a 4x increase in game performance compared to no DLSS.

Since DLSS-generated frames are performed as post-processing on the GPU, even if the game is CPU performance-constrained, you can get a performance boost from it. For CPU-bound games, such as physics-intensive or large-scale games, DLSS 3 enables GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs to render games at up to twice the computational performance of the CPU.

On the gaming side, more than 35 games and apps have announced their upcoming support for the technology, which will soon support the world's most popular game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine.
