Apple planning premium podcast subscription to rival Spotify

Apple is discussing launching a podcast subscription service to rival Spotify, SiriusXM, and Amazon. Spotify spent most of 2019/2020 buying podcasting companies to flesh out its exclusive portfolio. Both Apple and Amazon have wizened up and started their own podcast acquisitions.

Many of us like to listen to our favorite podcasts while driving, but if Apple’s plans align with the rumors above, there’s a chance the only way to continue doing this would be by paying a monthly fee.

Apple is very likely to sign exclusive deals for a series of popular podcasts, which means the only way you’ll be able to listen to them will be to pay for the content.

There is a chance Apple investing in a premium podcast service would generate an outcome similar to what happens today in the movie streaming business where companies like HBO and Netflix are fighting over exclusive titles. In other words, Apple and its rivals would each have their own exclusive podcasts, and the only way to enjoy them all would be with a subscription for each of them.

For now, however, it looks like Apple is still in the planning phase, with the company said to be involved in discussions with a series of partners.
