Gartner: Smartphone sales rose 26% in the first quarter

After declining sharply in 2020, global sales of end-user smartphones grew 26% in the first quarter of 2021, according to Gartner, the global research and studies institute. It has grown by 22% year on year.

In this context, Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner, said, High consumer confidence, continued work and study from home, as well as strong levels of demand in 2020, are reasons for increased consumer spending on non-essential items, with the epidemic situation improving in parts of the country. Many countries from the world, in addition to the openness of markets, cannot, in any case, ignore the fact that the comparison is mainly with the sales of 2020, which were lower than in 2019 and this explains the achievement of global sales of smartphones to double-digit growth levels.

The three major global smartphone vendors retained their positions in the first quarter of 2021, and the launch of mid-priced smartphones, such as phones priced at less than $150, boosted global sales of Samsung phones, as well as the company's smartphone sales growth due to the promotion of shipping. Its flagship smartphones support 5G networks.

Apple fell to second place in the first quarter of 2021, after it was ranked first in the last quarter of 2020, and the launch of the first iPhone supporting the 5G network led to continued demand for Apple phones in 2021, and Gupta noted: 5G will be Apple's primary growth driver in 2021, and hardware upgrades will drive demand for Apple's flagship phones throughout the year.

All the top five smartphone vendors achieved strong year-on-year growth during 2020, which indicates that the smartphone market revolves around the top five sellers, and Chinese smartphone vendors Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have seen a growing demand for their fifth-generation smartphones. 5G, as these companies took advantage of opportunities due to the decline in sales of Huawei and LG phones worldwide during this quarter.

The global shortage of chip manufacturing did not affect smartphone sales, as there was a balance between supply and demand, but the situation could change throughout the year and could lead to an increase in the average selling price of smartphones worldwide.
