iPad models may use OLED screens next year

After introducing the Mini LED technology in the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Apple is now planning to adopt OLED screens for some other iPads starting next year. According to the report, Apple has confirmed that the iPad will be equipped with an OLED screen, as it is expected to enter the small and medium-sized OLED screen market in its second growth phase.

Apple is the number one company in the tablet market, and with the iPad transition to OLED, the small and medium-sized OLED screen market, which has grown via smartphones, is getting a new foothold for growth.

Investment in small and medium-sized OLED, which has been on hold for a while, is expected to resume in earnest, so the revitalization of manufacturing industries such as materials, parts and equipment is also drawing attention.

IPad from Apple:

Apple has decided to use OLED instead of LCD screens from some 2022 iPad models. Apple has agreed with the display companies on production and delivery. As for the OLED screens for the new iPads, Samsung and LG are likely to offer them. Both companies supply OLED displays for Apple's iPhones and are developing OLED displays for iPads. This is the first time that Apple has introduced OLED screens to a regular iPad. Apple has been using LCD screens for a while.

The decision to switch to OLED was made when OLED surpassed LCD screen in image quality, weight, and design due to technological development. Earlier, Apple also changed the iPhone from LCD to OLED. iPhones used OLED screens for the first time in one model in 2017. Then, Apple expanded its use to include all models. It is also expected that OLED screens on iPads will be used in earnest from 2023 after some models get them next year.

The transition of the iPad from Apple to OLED may stimulate expansion and investment in the small and medium-sized OLED screen market. The iPad is the world's best-selling tablet. According to market research firms, about 50 million units are sold annually. Compared to iPhones, which sell 200 million units each year, it seems small. But the iPad screen size is between 11 and 13 inches.

Considering the use of medium-sized OLED, which is 3-4 times larger than smartphones, this is expected to expand the market for small and medium-sized OLED screens. Assuming 50 million iPads have all moved to OLED. This means that there is new demand equivalent to between 150 million and 200 million OLED screens for the iPhone.
