Samsung develops Exynos chip with ray tracing

AMD is collaborating with Samsung to provide RDNA 2 graphics technology for Exynos. Which may give a boost to the performance of the GPU in Samsung flagship phones. This was announced at Computex 2021  after several leaks emerged regarding the partnership between Samsung and AMD to bring RDNA 2 to the flagship Exynos chip. But it was rumored at the time. The collaboration is now official. And we have more details on what AMD is bringing to Exynos chips. It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that Samsung has cooperated with AMD, as both companies worked together in 2019. This was done to bring the next-generation GPU architecture to mobile devices.

Samsung's collaboration with AMD:

During its Computex 2021 keynote, AMD teased some details about the upcoming Exynos chip with AMD graphics.

AMD is collaborating with Samsung on the next generation of Exynos chip, which includes a dedicated graphic architecture based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. AMD RDNA 2 architecture provides ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities for leading mobile devices.

Although no more details have been shared about this collaboration, the company has talked about how Samsung will share more details about the new 5G chipset later this year. Looking at the statement, the successor to the Exynos 2100 chip can be seen later this year. It also means that we can start forecasting AMD-powered Galaxy S series devices by the first half of 2022.

There are also rumors that Exynos 2200 laptops with AMD graphics could start appearing as early as this year. And it's not certain if the AMD-Samsung partnership will give the Exynos series a much-needed boost. It is known that graphic performance has always been the weakest point of Samsung's internal Exynos chipset. So that could soon change with AMD helping it with graphics, ray tracing, variable-rate shading, and possibly more technology.

AMD has partnered with Samsung to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market. So the next place you find RDNA 2 will be the high-performance mobile market. Galaxy flagships are shipped in the US and some other markets with Qualcomm's Snapdragon. While the rest of the world is getting Exynos chips.
