South Korea: one out of two communication disputes 'unresolved'

The Communications Dispute Mediation Committee of the Korea Communications Commission received 727 dispute mediation applications from June 2019 to December 2020 and resolved 385 cases, 53% of them.

The Korea Communications Commission announced on the 28th.

As for the number of applications, KT had the highest number of applications with 184 cases (38.4%), and KT had the highest number of applications per 100,000 subscribers with 1.1 cases.

For wired communication services, KT had the most with 97 cases (39.1%). However, LG U+ had the highest number of applications per 100,000 subscribers with 1.4.

As for the types of disputes, 170 cases (23.4%) were related to 'service quality in wireless communication, and 127 cases (17.5%) were related to 'contract/cancellation' in wired communication.

In terms of dispute resolution, LGU+ (58.0%) had the highest rate of dispute resolution, followed by KT (39.7%) and SK Telecom (31.7%). In wired communication, SKT (73.3%), SK Broadband (73.1%), KT (68.0%), and LGU+ (63.2%) appeared in that order.

In the case of wireless communication, LGU+ (22.7%) had the highest acceptance rate of the dispute resolution committee's mediation proposal, followed by KT (13.6%) and SKT (8.0%). For wired communication, SKB (32.7%) and LGU+ (23.5%) %), KT (21.6%), and SKT (20.0%).

The Korea Communications Commission plans to develop various evaluation indicators using the case handling results of the telecommunication dispute mediation support system introduced this year, and announce the evaluation results reflecting them every year from next year.

Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission Han Sang-hyuk said, "I hope that operators will more actively participate in the telecommunications dispute mediation process to quickly resolve the inconvenience of the people's telecommunications services."
