Apple provides free operating systems for Mac computers

Apple announced that Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion will be available for free download in the summer of 2021. The company has kept OS X 10.7 Lion and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion available to customers with hardware limited to legacy software. But until recently it was charging $20 to provide the download for updates. This is the first time that any version of the operating system is available for free.

All versions of the operating system released after these versions were delivered free of charge to users of Apple products. Beginning with Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Apple began making updates to its operating system free of charge for compatible devices.
