Apple will soon present a new line of iPhone smartphones to the public. Meanwhile, more and more details about the iPhone 13 appear on the network.
This time, the information came directly from a couple of sources. First, renowned network whistleblower Jon Prosser revealed that Apple is currently testing new Face ID hardware that can handle facial recognition in response to the pandemic. The difficulty of recognizing masked faces is one problem that Apple has been trying to cope with almost since the beginning of the pandemic - masked faces are simply not recognized, so they had to add unlock using the Apple Watch.
Now, the problem of face recognition in masks and glasses was approached from the other side - not with the help of a software update for the existing Face ID system, but with the help of a modified version of Face ID sensors, which will be able to "recognize" users even in difficult conditions.
Prosser notes that Apple has prototyped an iPhone 12 case with a new array of Face ID sensors for internal use. This array is consistent with the iPhone 13 drawings leaked to the network in July, and does not match the one used in the iPhone 12. Prosser also rendered this case for clarity, since he could not publish real photos for security reasons of his sources.
At Apple headquarters, employees are asked to wear masks and also wear glasses to test the new Face ID system. Some tests are carried out without goggles and goggles, some with goggles and with a mask or without goggles and with a mask. The tests are carried out both indoors and outdoors, with different types of masks and goggles. This includes testing the behavior of the system with foggy glasses - this is a common problem when wearing a mask.
Internal testing has already shown that the prototype's Face ID array can authenticate and unlock iPhones without the need for an Apple Watch. And we are not talking about the approach when users set up the Face ID system, immediately being in a mask. During testing, employees initially registered in the Face ID system without masks and glasses, and then checked its performance with these.
Another source, McGuire Wood, clarified that the feature may be late for the iPhone 13 release, and after some time Apple will release a software update that will add new features to the iPhone 13.
John Prosser is a fairly reliable informant. For example, last year he was the first to reveal the exact dates of the announcement of the iPhone SE 2020 and MacBook Pro 13, and also noted a number of other truthful leaks.
