Qualcomm unveils world's first 5G AI reference drone

Qualcomm has unveiled Flight RB5 5G, a platform for unmanned aerial vehicles. As the manufacturer notes, this is the world's first drone platform with 5G support and an artificial intelligence system.

In fact, it is a reference platform that third-party developers and manufacturers can use. They are offered three sets of software for neural processing, computer vision, and multimedia applications.

At the heart of Flight RB5, 5G is a QRB5165 processor with eight Kryo 585 cores (four Kryo Gold and four Kryo Silver) and an Adreno 650 graphics accelerator. The same CPU and GPU cores are used in the Snapdragon 865 SoC.

The Qualcomm Spectra 480 image processor allows you to capture 200-megapixel stills and 8K video at 30 frames per second. In addition, the drone can record 4K footage at 120fps with HDR support. It is possible to use up to seven cameras simultaneously.

Besides 5G, the drone also supports WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. It also uses 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.0 flash memory. It is noted that it is possible to create a "swarm" of such drones and exchange information between them.

The Flight RB5 5G platform is already available to order, and deliveries will begin during the third quarter of 2021. The developer kit will be available in the fourth quarter of 2021. A $ 1,000 deposit is required to pre-order, and the full price is $ 3,999 for the non-5G version and $ 4,999 for the 5G version.
