Emerging Markets 5G Smartphone Shipments Up 6.5% QoQ

According to the latest data from Counterpoint, 5G smartphone shipments in emerging markets in the second quarter of 2021 grew by 6.5% compared to the first quarter, although overall smartphone shipments in these regions declined by 5%.

Analysts attribute the rise in 5G shipments to "the hype surrounding the iPhone 12, Apple's first 5G device, and the launch of 5G models in affordable segments by other OEMs such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Realme." In addition, emerging markets, especially Southeast Asia and the Middle East, are rapidly building up 5G infrastructure, leading to increased demand for 5G smartphones. Unsurprisingly, major smartphone OEMs are currently prioritizing 5G-enabled models.
