Samsung unveils world's first 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP1 mobile image sensor

A series of rumors about whether or not to be a smartphone with a 200-megapixel camera is over. Samsung today officially unveiled this high-resolution image sensor for smartphones. Is the pixel race going on?

Apparently, yes. Sony and OmniVision will also answer ISOCELL HP1, but for now let's look at the characteristics of the new product. Of course, a sensor with such a huge resolution could not be small. At the same time, the layout of the smartphone does not imply (yet) the installation of large sensors. So the ISOCELL HP1, one might say, turned out to be a compromise - not an inch, but about that. Optical format - 1 / 1.22 inches. Pixel size - 0.64 microns.

ChameleonCell pixel combining technology debuted with the sensor for more light capture. She has two options for work: 2 x 2 and 4 x 4. Accordingly, in the first case, the resolution is reduced four times, to 50 megapixels, in the second - 16 times, only to 12.5 megapixels. But the size of the "pixels" in the first case increases to 1.28 microns, in the second - to 2.65 microns. The sensor supports 8K video recording at 30 fps and 4K video at 120 fps. Interestingly, Samsung hasn't said anything about the ISOCELL HP1 autofocus system, but one might think that there is at least Dual Pixel technology here - as in many of the company's other sensors.

But the 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN5 uses Dual Pixel Pro technology - omnidirectional. The optical format of the sensor is 1 / 1.57 inches, the pixel size is 1 micron. The sensor supports 2 x 2 pixel binning for low-light shooting, while the resolution is reduced to 12.5 megapixels. It also features Front Deep Trench Isolation technology to capture as much light as possible while reducing noise. This sensor also supports 8K video recording at 30 fps and 4K video at 120 fps.

Both new items are already available to smartphone manufacturers for review, and ready-made devices with them will appear next year. However, the first 200-megapixel smartphone may be released before the end of the year. According to rumors, this could be the Xiaomi Mi 12 Ultra. However, there is evidence that he will receive three sensors with a resolution of "only" 50 megapixels.
