The importance of a high refresh rate in iPhone 13 and other devices

Interest in the high refresh rate feature has increased in recent years. It is a feature that was introduced in dozens of phones running the Android operating system from different companies, and finally, Apple started providing it with the Pro and Pro Max versions of the iPhone 13.

This feature contributes to improving the overall viewing experience. This is mainly because it is a feature related to screens. And smartphones and devices in general that come with high refresh rate screens deliver a smoother and faster experience.

The concept of refresh rate is related to the field of video games as well. There is no doubt that interest in this feature has increased after Apple announced that it was finally available in iPhone 13 phones after users waited for it in iPhone 12 and iPhone 11.

What is the refresh rate?

A scene displayed on any screen consists of a number of still images. It is displayed very quickly and in succession. Each image can be expressed with the term frame. The refresh rate is simply the number of frames displayed per second.

The refresh rate is measured in Hz, and this unit of measurement can be paralleled to the frame. As an example for simplicity, a monitor with a refresh rate of 120 Hz is capable of displaying 120 frames per second.

And come traditional screens with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, for example, iPhone 12 phones, this means that these screens were able to display 60 frames - that is, a static image - only per second. Which is a small number compared to 120 frames.

The number of tires required varies according to the type of use. For example, movies depend on a rate of only 24 frames per second, and this is because they are directed to cinemas, and this is the normal rate for them. While games may need more than 60 Hz to provide the best possible experience.

The high refresh rate affects the battery life clearly. Because the phone is spending more power to process and display all those frames. So companies started relying on what is known as the adaptive refresh rate.

The adaptive refresh rate feature, which is also present in the latest iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max phones, allows the phone to switch between very low and very high refresh rates based on the quality of the content the user is watching.

This is as the phone may rely on a refresh rate of 60 Hz only while watching YouTube videos, and a rate of 24 Hz only while watching movies, and up to 120 Hz while playing.

The importance of refresh rate in other devices

Also, some TVs offer a high refresh rate feature, which usually comes in a higher price category, and these devices offer the same benefits mentioned above of smooth display and refresh speed, but they also provide a better experience than smartphones because they are always connected to electricity and do not have batteries.

And back to talking about smartphones and tablets, they benefit more from the high refresh rate when it is adaptive because this saves battery life significantly.

On the other hand, PC monitors also come with high refresh rates of up to 265 Hz. However, using these monitors requires high-performance graphics cards to be able to handle so many frames.

iPhone 13 Pro refresh rate

The high refresh rate of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max enables a better experience in every aspect, from smooth browsing to gaming performance.

The adaptive refresh rate feature of the phone also allows moving freely between 10 Hz and 120 Hz. This means that the phone may offer better battery life despite the support of the new feature. The feature comes under the name ProMotion in the new iPhone, and it is the same technology that has been in the iPad Pro tablets for some time.
