Apple adds new feature to flagship AirPods Pro and AirPods Max headphone

Apple has released an update to its flagship wireless headphones that adds search functionality to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Compatible AirPods get new functionality within the Find My app, including precise location, a new nearby search UI, Lost Mode, and the ability to receive notifications.

To take advantage of this, you first need to update your AirPods to the new firmware. The new feature means AirPods Pro and AirPods Max participate in the Find My network and send continuous messages over Bluetooth. When other Apple devices are nearby, they can detect this signal and report it to the Find My network by showing the location on the owner's map. This is similar to how long-distance AirTags work.

By being within close range of AirPods, users can now get a visual indicator of their location. Unfortunately, you don't see the directional arrows because the AirPods don't have the U1 chip.

In Lost Mode, iPhone users who have lost their AirPods will now be able to leave a message and a contact phone number. If the AirPods are found by someone else and are paired with the iOS device, a lost message will be displayed, allowing you to return the accessory to the owner.

The new features are only compatible with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Standard AirPods do not support these features, but the upcoming third-generation AirPods are believed to support it.
