Apple released macOS 12 Monterey

Apple on Monday released the stable version of its new Mac operating system, macOS 12 Monterey, which has been tested since the summer following the June announcement at WWDC 2021.

MacOS 12 Monterey has a lot of innovations in its arsenal. FaceTime has support for spatial audio, the SharePlay function for sharing video and listening to music, two new microphone modes: in the "Voice isolation" mode, background noise is muted and the voice sounds clearer, and in the "Wide spectrum" mode, interlocutors can hear everything. what's going on around is the "Portrait" mode, which makes the user stand out and blurs the background, as well as the grid mode when the participants in the call are displayed in cells of the same size.

The functions "Online Text" and "Visual Search" use the new capabilities of artificial intelligence to find information.

The Safari browser now has the ability to combine tabs into groups. Tab groups sync between Mac, iPhone, and iPad. And on the Mac, Siri Shortcuts have become available to automate various actions, just like in iOS.

Also noteworthy is the Universal Control function. It allows you to easily switch between Mac and iPad using the same mouse and keyboard, without any additional setup. You can enter text using the keyboard on any device, drag and drop content between devices, draw on iPad with Apple Pencil, then add artwork directly to apps on Mac, and more.

AirPlay broadcasts allow you to play, show or send content from iPhone or iPad to Mac - broadcast movies, games, photos and presentations, music.

The Focus feature lets you filter notifications from apps and people based on what the user is currently doing. Focus settings set on a Mac are automatically applied to all of the user's devices in the Apple ecosystem. In Focus mode, Messages and other supported applications such as Slack automatically display the corresponding status. And that's not all of the innovations in macOS 12 Monterey.

MacOS 12 Monterey is available as a free software update on Apple-based Macs and Intel-based Macs:

  • iMac - Late 2015 and newer
  • Mac Pro - Late 2013 and newer
  • iMac Pro - 2017 and newer
  • Mac mini - Late 2014 and newer
  • MacBook Air - Early 2015 and newer
  • MacBook - Early 2016 and newer
  • MacBook Pro - Early 2015 and newer

Note that SharePlay and Universal Control are not available at the time of release - to activate them, Apple will release a separate macOS 12 Monterey update before the end of the fall.
