Apple Watch Series 7 in the first test

As of today, the new Apple Watch Series 7 is available for 429 euros. Instead of installing new health sensors, Apple has enlarged the display and display area of the smartwatch and given it new functions such as an on-screen keyboard. We were able to try out a copy for a few hours.

A small, big redesign

Although the rumor mill assumed a new, angular case before the introduction, the Series 7 is based on its predecessors. It has only grown minimally: the length (from the top to the bottom edge of the case) is now 41 and 45 mm instead of the previous 40 and 44 mm. The watch has increased its width by 0.4 mm each: it now measures 34.8 and 38.2 mm. According to Apple, the display glass is over 50 percent thicker than its predecessor and therefore more stable. However, nothing has changed in terms of the overall thickness.

Good news for existing customers: The bracelets from older Apple watches can still be used on the new models. Anything else would have caused outrage, as the original bracelets in particular are quite expensive.

Brighter display with more space

In Series 7, the display edge has shrunk: it is only 1.7 mm wide instead of the previous 3 mm. In return, Apple has enlarged the display area and increased the resolution of the LTPO OLEDs: it is now 352 × 430 or 396 × 484 pixels.

Some apps benefit from the additional space by showing more information: In Apple's Maps app, for example, you see a slightly larger image section and iMessage shows more text at once. Other apps or control elements scale at the higher resolution and show larger buttons, such as the home app, which is used to operate Apple's smart home interface HomeKit, or the training app. Even in the control center, on the calculator or on the lock screen, you no longer see icons, but larger ones. This makes it easier to hit the buttons or to enter the lock code more easily.

The always-on display shines brighter than before when it is inactive, i.e. when you let your arm hang down. According to Apple, it is now up to 500 nits (corresponds to candela / m 2 ). We weren't able to measure it in a hurry, but in a direct comparison the Series 7 looked a bit brighter. However, Apple has not changed the maximum brightness. As before, it should be up to 1000 nits.
