Fairphone 4: Smartphone designer with a 5-year warranty

Amsterdam-based Fairphone has unveiled the successor to the world's most repairable smartphone, the Fairphone 4. The smartphone is released a year after the launch of Fairphone 3+ and two years after the debut of Fairphone 3 in August 2019, and Fairphone 2 was introduced in the summer of 2015.

Fairphone modular smartphones are not well known. Nevertheless, it was Fairphone 2 and Fairphone 3 that were able to get 10 points out of 10 possible on the iFixit maintainability scale. No other smartphone has managed to achieve this, although iFixit has not yet tested the Fairphone 4. Thus, they can still be considered the most maintainable smartphones in the world.

The new model offers a more modern design and modern filling with support for fifth-generation 5G cellular networks. In this case, the smartphone is given a five-year warranty. Fairphone 4 is equipped with a 6.3-inch IPS screen with Full HD + resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels) and protective glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a front camera with a resolution of 25 MP (Sony IMX576, f / 2.2), the main camera with two sensors on 48 MP (main module with Sony IMX582, optical image stabilization, and f / 1.6 aperture, ultra-wide-angle module f / 2.2).

The hardware is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G single-chip system, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and 128 or 256 GB of internal flash memory. The 3905mAh battery supports 30W fast charging. Supports two 5G SIM cards, Wi-Fi (802.11 b / g / n / ac, 2.4 and 5 GHz), NFC, and Bluetooth 5.1, there is a USB Type-C port, a side fingerprint scanner. Dimensions are 162 x 75.5 x 10.5 mm, the smartphone weighs 225 grams. The smartphone runs Android 11, with two major Android updates and software support promised until the end of 2025.

As for the maintainability of the novelty, Fairphone said that according to the French French Repairability Index, the new Fairphone 4 managed to score 9.2 out of 10 possible points. For comparison: the previous model Fairphone 3+ boasts a more modest result - 8.7 out of 10.

Like its predecessors, the Fairphone 4 has a modular design that allows you to easily replace the battery, screen, camera module, and other parts using a standard screwdriver. Despite the modularity, the smartphone has received protection from water (IP54) and meets the military standard MIL-STD-810G for resistance to external influences.

The kit does not include a USB cable, charger and other accessories for environmental reasons - you have to buy them separately. The smartphone can be purchased for 579 euros for the 6/128 GB model and 649 euros for the 8/256 GB model. Acceptance of pre-orders began today, and open sales start on October 25th. Separately, you can buy the following modules for repair: battery (€ 30), main camera (€ 80), selfie camera (€ 30), display, speaker, USB Type-C port, and rear panel.
