Intel Core i5-12400 (Alder Lake) bypasses hit Ryzen 5 5600X in performance

Ryzen 5 5600X is one of the most popular processors of the Ryzen 5000 line not only in Russia but also in other countries. This CPU is one of the best deals on the market in terms of price/performance, but ... it may soon lose that status. Because from a performance standpoint, the latest Core i5-12400 looks preferable.

Core i5-12400 is not quite a typical representative of the Alder Lake line, since it does not have a division into large and small cores, as in the same Core i7-12700 and Core i9-12900. If you do not take into account other innovations in the Alder Lake architecture, the Core i5-12400 is, we can say, a representative of the old school: with six full cores (Golden Cove) and, accordingly, the execution of 12 threads. The CPU has 18 MB of L3 cache and a maximum clock speed of 4.0 GHz with all six cores loaded. The maximum frequency when loading one core is 4.4 GHz. Of course, these data are preliminary, since the official premiere of Alder Lake will take place on October 27.

The test results of the serial Core i5-12400 can also be higher, but now this processor bypasses its direct competitor. In the CPU-Z benchmark, it scored 681 points in a single-threaded test and 4983 points in a multi-threaded test, which is about 18% more than the Ryzen 5 5600X can afford. It is important to note that the CPU was tested with an Intel B660 chipset motherboard that only supports DDR4 RAM. So, we can say that the test conditions are as close to real ones as possible.

In the Cinebench R20 benchmark, the Core i5-12400 scored 659 points in a single-threaded test and 4,784 points in a multi-threaded one. For comparison, the Ryzen 5 5600X has 610 and 4475 points, respectively.

Unlike the Core i7 and even more so the Core i9, which devours electricity in huge quantities, the Core i5-12400 will be a fairly energy-efficient CPU: when all six cores are loaded, it consumes about 78.5 W (TDP - 65 W).

And finally, the price. If the Core i5-12400 will cost at the level of the current Core i5-11400 (up to $ 200 / euro, depending on the country), then it will be a very good competitive offer. Such a CPU is quite capable of moving the most popular Ryzen 5 5600X.
