Renesas unveils automotive gateway solution for secure cloud connectivity

Renesas Electronics has unveiled an innovative automotive gateway solution that includes R-Car S4 SoCs and Power Controllers (PMICs). According to the manufacturer, this solution can serve as the basis for next-generation car computers, communication gateways, domain servers and application servers. It meets the high demands of the automotive industry in terms of performance, security and network connection speed. The solution also significantly improves development efficiency through the reusability of the software.

The Renesas R-Car S4 is one of the first products in the 4th generation Renesas R-Car family. The SoC configuration includes eight Arm Cortex A55 cores running at 1.2GHz, a dual-core Cortex R52 running at 1GHz, and two RH850 G4MH dual-cores running at 400MHz. The single-chip system is endowed with a large number of automotive interfaces, including 16x CAN FD, 16x LIN, 8x SENT, 1x FlexRay, 4x PCIe V4.0, as well as a 3 x 2.5 Gbps Ethernet switch. This allows you to "cover" any connection options both inside the car and outside. For the exterior design, the FCBGA case was chosen with dimensions of 23 x 23 mm (R-Car S4) and 19 x 19 mm (R-Car S4N)

The R-Car S4 is said to allow developers to reuse up to 88% of the software code developed for the 3rd generation R-Car SoC and RH850 microcontrollers. The software package supports the development of R-Car S4 applications, including real-time kernels with various drivers and basic software such as Linux BSP and hypervisors. In addition, partner company Renesas offers a virtual platform (VPF), enabling early development and evaluation of software to reduce design time and costs.

The new PMICs for R-Car provide enhanced power modes while maintaining very low power consumption. The PMIC RAA271041 accepts 12 V and provides a stable surge voltage including cold-start surge. The RAA271005 multichannel controller accepts the RAA271041 output and lowers it to the various supply voltages required for the R-Car S4 and peripheral units such as LPDDR4x memory. PMIC RAA271041 and RAA271005 are complete solutions for power supply from the vehicle batteries.

Samples of R-Car S4, RAA271041, RAA271005, and evaluation boards are already available.
