Apple iPad has no equal in the global tablet market so far

Research firm IDC released a report on global tablet shipments in the third quarter, according to which they reached 42.3 million units, down 9.4% from a year earlier. Still, Apple's iPad shipments continue to grow in a shrinking market.

Apple iPad shipments in the third quarter were 14.7 million units, up from 14 million units a year earlier. This is a 4.6% increase over the same period last year, bringing Apple's share of the tablet market to 34.6%.

Apple has a strong lead in the tablet market. The second place is occupied by Samsung with a market share of 17.7%, Amazon is in third place with a market share of 11.1%. Samsung and Amazon tablet shipments fell 11.1% and 13.3% year over year, respectively.

Many educational institutions and governments have spent their budgets purchasing distance learning devices, and even consumers have aggressively bought learning devices in 2020. As a result, some saturation of the educational market is expected in the near future. Apple expects fourth-quarter iPad shipments to remain flat due to ongoing supply chain constraints. What's more, sources have confirmed that iPad production has dropped 50% over the past two months from the original plan.
