Apple self-service repair program will provide individual consumers with parts, tools and repair manuals

Apple today announced that starting with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, it will provide individual consumers with parts, tools, and repair manuals, which are called "self-repair plans." The program will allow customers to obtain Apple's original parts and tools to repair the equipment themselves.

It is reported that the plan will first be applied to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series products, and Mac computers equipped with the M1 chip will also be added soon.

The self-maintenance program will be launched in the United States from early next year and will be extended to other countries in 2022 or later. Customers will access these parts, tools, and manuals in the same way as more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) and 2,800 independent repair service providers.

The initial stage of Apple's plan will focus on the parts that require repair services most often, such as the iPhone display, battery, and camera. Self-service repairs for other parts will be opened later next year.

"Further opening up the scope of access to Apple original parts will give our customers more choices when they need to repair equipment." Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said, "In the past three years, Apple has made available Apple original parts and tools. The number of service outlets for training has nearly doubled, and now we will provide new options for users who wish to complete repairs on their own."

Prior to this, if Apple products need repairs, only trained technicians in thousands of service outlets including Apple (in the store or by mail), AASP, independent repair suppliers, etc., can use Apple original parts to provide repair services, but now A new self-service repair plan has been added, which is more friendly to the majority of Apple users.

In other words, now, product owners with repair skills can also complete repairs by themselves.

Self-repair plan

To ensure the safe completion of repairs, customers must first consult the repair manual. After that, customers can order Apple's original parts and repair tools in the Apple self-repair online store. After the repair is completed, if customers choose to return the replaced parts to Apple for recycling, they can also enjoy discounts when purchasing Apple products in the future.

The new online store will provide more than 200 individual parts and tools, enabling customers to complete common repairs to iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

The self-maintenance plan is suitable for technicians who have knowledge and experience in repairing electronic equipment. For the vast majority of customers, the safest and most reliable way to obtain repair services is still to go to a professional repair service provider and deliver the equipment to a certified technician using Apple's original parts for repair.
