Despite the scarcity of components, high-resolution image sensors are increasingly used in the main cameras of smartphones, penetrating from the upper segment of the market to the lower ones. According to the latest research by Counterpoint, smartphones with 48MP or more main cameras in the second quarter of 2021 accounted for 43% of total sales. This is significantly more than the 38.7% in the first quarter of 2021. The share of cameras with a resolution of 64 megapixels alone increased over the quarter from 3.5% to 14%.
In general, 48 and 64-megapixel cameras have become typical for devices costing between $ 200 and $ 400, while in flagship smartphones there has been a tendency to increase the size of the sensor to obtain better images. The most common resolution of such sensors is 50 megapixels.
As for the front cameras, in the second quarter of 2021 the share of resolutions of 20 megapixels and above remained practically unchanged compared to the previous quarter due to a drop in sales of top-level models.
It is noteworthy that in the case of sensors with a lower resolution, an imbalance between supply and demand continues to be observed, as a result of which their price increases. For example, sensors with a resolution of 5 megapixels have increased in price by more than 10% since the beginning of this year.
