Sales of chromebooks and tablets fell for the first time

Analyst firm IDC claims that shipments of Chromebooks and tablets have declined in the last quarter. This is the first time since the start of the pandemic, after five quarters of growth driven by a shift to telecommuting and learning.

According to IDC calculations, shipments of Chromebooks in annual terms decreased by 29.8%. In total, 6.5 million units were shipped in the third quarter of 2021. At the same time, the supply of tablets decreased compared to the same period last year by 9.4% - to 42.3 million units.

Analysts attribute this to the lifting of restrictions in many regions, which weakened the demand for Chromebooks and tablets and at the same time led to an increase in spending in other categories. The reduction is also due to the fact that the comparison is with the third quarter of 2020 when shipments peaked.

Tablet sales rose in the past year due to many factors, including their versatility, lack of PC components, and comparatively lower selling prices. Despite a slowdown in demand, commercial use of tablets in industries such as logistics, healthcare, and banking is expected to continue as the pandemic has changed the way many businesses do their day-to-day operations.

Lenovo is the leader among Chromebook vendors, but it cut shipments from 1.7 million units to 1.5 million units, or 10% over the year, bringing Lenovo's share down from 23.1% to 18.0%. In second place is the Acer Group, which reduced shipments from 1.6 to 1.4 million units, or by 14.6%. As the market shrank more, the share of Acer Group even increased slightly - from 17.1% to 20.8%. The third place is taken by Dell Technologies. Over the year, it reduced supplies by 5.7%, but its share increased from 13.4% to 18.0%. Next comes HP, which cut shipments by 66.1%. Its share decreased from 35.0% to 16.9%. And Samsung closes the top five. The South Korean manufacturer cut supplies by only 0.2%, so that its share increased from 6.2% to 8.9%.

Moving to the tablet market, Apple increased shipments of these devices by 4.6% - from 14.0 to 14.7 million units. As a result, Apple's share increased from 30% to 34.6%. In second place is Samsung, which reduced shipments by 11.1%, which led to a decrease in its share from 18.0% to 17.7%. Amazon reduced shipments by 13.3%, which led to a decrease in its share from 11.6% to 11.1%. In fourth place, Lenovo was able to ramp up shipments. Growth in annual terms by 2.1% led to the fact that its share increased from 9.0% to 10.1%. The fifth-ranked Huawei company reduced shipments by 45.9%, as a result of which its share decreased from 9.0% to 5.4%.
