Yiwei Lithium Energy and BAK Battery plan to mass produce 4680 cylindrical batteries this year

There are more and more Chinese companies deploying cylindrical power batteries, and this market has always been centered on Japanese and South Korean power battery suppliers. It is reported that Ningde Times, Yiwei Lithium Energy, and BAK Battery plan to start mass production of 4680 cylindrical batteries this year. Yiwei Lithium and BAK are currently building infrastructure for the production of NCM batteries with a diameter of 46 mm and a length of 80 mm.

The capacity and output of these batteries are at least 500% and 200% of existing cylindrical batteries. In addition, these batteries are easier to produce, less expensive, and have advantages in battery system control and design. Panasonic, LG New Energy, Samsung SDI, etc. are also preparing for production.

The report pointed out that so far, Chinese companies have been focusing on lithium iron phosphate batteries. However, as some automakers and EV startups, including Tesla, are interested in 4680 cells, they are shifting their focus to cylindrical cells.

Specifically, Panasonic is currently in the final stages of development and plans to start production in Japan this year. LG New Energy and Samsung SDI followed. Lucid Motors is also considering using the same battery.
