5G commercialization enters a new stage

The IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group officially learned that at the 96th meeting of the 3GPP plenary meeting, the 5G Rel-17 standard was announced to be frozen, and the global 5G commercialization entered a new stage.

The IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group stated that as one of the main contents of the Rel-17 standard, RedCap (Reduced Capability) realizes the 5G network service capability for medium and high-speed IoT scenarios , and further expands 5G application scenarios and solutions. RedCap is aimed at typical application scenarios such as smart wearable devices, industrial wireless sensors and video surveillance. It is expected that the number of global connections will reach nearly 10 billion by 2030 . In response to the above scenario requirements, RedCap can achieve a data transmission rate higher than LPWA such as NB-IoT and LTE-M, and its cost and power consumption are far lower than eMBB, achieving a balance between network performance and terminal cost. It is estimated that the overall cost of RedCap modules can be reduced by 5 times compared to eMBB, and the price of large-scale commercial modules is comparable to CAT 4.

The IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group said that it will make every effort to promote the maturity of the RedCap industry and promote the formation of a unified consensus. In March 2022, the 25th meeting of the test group of the promotion group will clearly carry out research on RedCap key technologies, formulate test specifications, and plan to organize RedCap key technologies and end-to-end testing in stages. In 2022, it plans to complete the research on RedCap application scenarios and key technologies , formulate key technology test specifications, and conduct key technology tests; in 2023, formulate test specifications for terminals and system equipment, and carry out end-to-end testing and interoperability testing to meet the commercial needs of RedCap.
