Fitness Training App Update

As one of the most popular apps on Apple Watch, the fitness training app has been updated to provide users with richer measurement indicators and a new exercise experience to help users achieve their fitness goals. In the familiar training progress interface, users can now rotate the digital crown to switch between various easy-to-read physical training views and view important indicators of different training methods. Whether manually entered or automatically monitored based on personal health data, heart rate zones can be used to monitor the intensity of physical training. Interval training is an important part of any training plan, and in watchOS 9, the fitness training app introduces Custom Workouts, which can create systematic fitness training including training and interval rest. Users can add new reminders including pace, running power, heart rate and cadence to guide themselves through their workouts.

Inspired by elite athletes, the upgraded fitness training app provides richer measurement indicators, new views and exercise experiences to help users improve their training levels.

Run first

For runners, Apple Watch has long been a powerful tool, and watchOS 9 brings more data and features to help track users' running efficiency. New running form measurements including stride length, touchdown time and vertical amplitude can be added to the workout view. These metrics are also displayed in the fitness app's summary and in the health app, where users can view trends over time and spot patterns and learn about them.

New running posture measurement indicators, such as stride length and vertical amplitude, can help track the user's running efficiency.

Users can choose to race against their best or latest results on the routes they use most often, and receive alerts for over or behind their chosen pace and off course during workouts. In addition, a new pace feature allows users to select distance and time goals to calculate the pace needed to reach them. During workouts, users can adjust their workouts based on pace reminders and metrics provided by the watch.

Users can choose to race against their best or latest results on the most frequently used routes, and receive reminders for exceeding or falling behind the chosen pace and off-course during physical training.

Swimming function enhancement

Pool swimming fitness training adds floating board detection as a swimming style. Apple Watch's sensor fusion will automatically detect whether the user is using a floating board to swim, and categorize it in the fitness training summary and display the swimming distance. Swimmers can now track their efficiency using the SWOLF value, which is calculated as a combination of strokes and seconds per stroke. Users can view their average SWOLF per swim session in the workout summary.

Insight into sleep

The Apple Watch's Sleep App experience already lets users set sleep and bedtime schedules, as well as track sleep to help achieve sleep goals. Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 adds sleep stages to give users a better understanding of their sleep. The Apple Watch detects whether the user is in REM sleep, core sleep or deep sleep through signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensors. Users will see sleep stage data in the Sleep app on Apple Watch, see more details such as sleep time, and more metrics, such as heart rate and breathing rate, in the sleep comparison chart in the iPhone Health app.

The machine learning model is trained and validated by the clinical gold standard, polysomnography, in one of the largest and most diverse studies of wearables. As sleep science is still exploratory, users can also help make potential discoveries in the future by submitting their own sleep stage data in the Apple Heart and Exercise Study in the Research app.

First-of-its-kind atrial fibrillation history function

Currently, the Apple Watch's ECG app and arrhythmia alerts can identify potential signs of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation can be one of the leading causes of stroke if left untreated.

Research has shown that the length of time people experience atrial fibrillation can affect a person's symptoms, overall quality of life, and risk of complications. Previously, it was difficult to track the frequency of atrial fibrillation over an extended period of time or to manage life factors that could affect a person's health. According to the American Heart Association, changing variable life factors may reduce the duration of atrial fibrillation.

With the launch of watchOS 9, users diagnosed with atrial fibrillation can turn on the FDA-approved atrial fibrillation history function and obtain important information such as the estimated frequency of the heart rhythm showing signs of atrial fibrillation, allowing users to better understand their physical conditions. Users will receive weekly notifications about the frequency of atrial fibrillation and can view a detailed history in the Health app, including life factors that may affect atrial fibrillation, such as sleep, alcohol intake and exercise.

Users can download PDF files containing a detailed history of atrial fibrillation and life factors, which can be easily shared with doctors and caregivers for more detailed conversations.

Medication App

The new Medication app experience on Apple Watch and iPhone allows users to create medication lists, create schedules and reminders, and view medication information in the Health app, helping users manage and track their medications, vitamins and nutrients. Users can create a personalized schedule for each medication, and can also set reminders to help guide users to take their medication.

Privacy

Privacy is paramount in the design and development of all Apple features. When the user locks the phone with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, all health and exercise data in the Health App will be encrypted, except for the information in the medical emergency card. Any Health App data backed up to iCloud is also encrypted in transit or on Apple servers.
