NIO is developing its own lithium iron manganese phosphate and 4680 batteries, and plans to mass-produce these two batteries for supply to NIO and its sub-brand Alps.
In June this year, Li Bin said in the first quarter earnings conference call that Weilai has formed a battery-related team of more than 400 people and will launch an 800V high-voltage platform battery pack in 2024. According to reports, the above-mentioned 800V high-voltage battery is a 4680 battery, which is planned to be installed in the models of Weilai's third-generation platform (NT3).
According to sources, NIO will also start small-scale production of lithium iron manganese phosphate batteries to supply NIO’s sub-brand Alps. The brand is positioned in the market range of 200,000-300,000 and is expected to be launched in 2024.
The 4680 battery is a cylindrical battery with a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 80 mm. And successfully installed in some Model Y models, it will also be one of the development directions of major manufacturers in the future.
Compared with the 2170 battery previously used, the cell capacity of the Tesla 4680 battery is 5 times that of the 2170 battery, the charging power is 6 times higher, the cost per kWh is reduced by about 14%, and the driving range is increased by 16%. It is 6 times higher than the battery with tabs, and the power output is 6 times higher, and Musk said that the 4680 battery saves a total of about 86% of the cost, and the cost per kWh is reduced by 69%.
In addition, the 4680 is used with the CTC solution, that is, the cells are directly integrated into the chassis, which improves the energy density of the battery system, reduces the weight of the whole vehicle, improves production efficiency, and has more room for optimization in riding.
At present, the disadvantage of the 4680 battery is that it is impossible to determine whether the internal heat dissipation of the battery will increase, the battery will expand, and the battery life will be shortened.
