Apple today released the official version of tvOS 16 with version number (20J373), which is the latest version of the tvOS operating system for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD.
The tvOS 16 updates can be downloaded via OTA through the Settings app on Apple TV by going to System -> Software Update. Apple TV users with automatic software updates enabled will be automatically upgraded to tvOS 16.
Apple TV software updates are much smaller in scale than updates for other platforms like iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but there are some new features in tvOS 16 to be aware of.
This update brings gamepad support to Nintendo Joy-Cons and Pro controllers. When the smart home protocol Matter launches, Apple TVs with tvOS 16 will support the protocol to improve interoperability between smart home accessories from different companies.
tvOS 16 brings cross-device connectivity, a feature that allows developers to integrate Apple TV apps with iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch apps to unlock new experiences on Apple TV. Multi-user profiles are also improved through the use of shared keychains, which means users don't need to log in and select their profile when launching the Apple TV app.
