Available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, both models feature a new Super Retina XDR display that supports ProMotion technology, enabling an all-weather display for the first time on an iPhone with a new 1Hz refresh rate and multiple energy-saving technologies. This makes the new lock screen even more useful, with the time, widgets, and real-time activity always visible at a glance. This advanced display also delivers the same HDR peak brightness as the Pro Display XDR display, and the highest outdoor peak brightness ever seen in an iPhone: up to 2,000 nits, twice that of the iPhone 13 Pro.

Both models feature a new version of the ProMotion-enabled Super Retina XDR display, which is the first all-weather display on an iPhone with a new 1 Hz refresh rate and multiple power-saving technologies.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max continue to offer class-leading durability properties with Ultra-Ceramic panels that are far stronger than glass panels and are resistant to water, dust, and common accidental spills.

Smart Island: Interactive User Experience

Smart Island brings users a new way to interact with the iPhone, blurring the lines between hardware and software, showing important reminders, notifications, and events that change in real-time. With the introduction of Smart Island, the TrueDepth camera has been redesigned to reduce the display space it takes up. On the premise of not affecting the display of the screen content, the smart island remains active, allowing users to use the control options with just a long press. Activities that keep running in the background like maps, music apps or timers are always visible and interactive. In addition, Smart Island works with third-party apps in iOS 16 that provide information (such as game scores and carpool information) through Live Activity.

Blurring the line between hardware and software, Smart Island flexibly unfolds into various shapes to clearly visualize important operations such as Face ID verification.

Upgrading to a new high Pro-grade camera system

The Pro-grade camera system on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max pushes the limits of iPhone imaging capabilities. With it, every user can take the best photos and videos from everyday to professional.

The Pro-grade camera system on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max introduces the Lighting Engine, bringing computational photography capabilities to new heights and improving the performance of all cameras in low-to-mid-light photography scenarios through deep hardware and software integration.

The iPhone 14 Pro has brought computational photography to a new height through the light imaging engine. Under the deep integration of software and hardware, the performance of all cameras in medium and low light photography has achieved a great leap: the main camera has been improved by up to 2 times, and the ultra-wide-angle camera has improved by a lot. Up to 3x, telephoto camera up to 2x, and TrueDepth camera up to 2x. The dramatic jump in image quality is thanks to Lighting Engine technology that brings depth fusion up front in image processing to reveal stunning detail, capture subtle textures, make colors stand out, and preserve more in your photo's information.

The new 48-megapixel main camera allows users to take advantage of the new 2x telephoto option in addition to the three fixed lenses, a commonly used focal length that is very useful for portrait mode.

This is the first time that the Pro product line has adopted a new 48-megapixel main camera with a four-in-one pixel sensor. The four-in-one pixel sensor can be adjusted according to the photo taken, and it also has the second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization function. For most photos, the 4-in-1 pixel sensor combines every 4 pixels into one large pixel (equivalent to 2.44 microns in unit pixel size), resulting in high-quality images in low-light conditions and keeping the photo size at Practical 12 megapixels. The 4-in-1 Pixel sensor also supports a 2x telephoto option, taking full-resolution photos and 4K video with the 12 megapixels in the center of the sensor, without the need for digital zoom. This option provides optical quality imaging at common focal lengths and is useful for functions such as portrait mode. The 4-in-1 pixel sensor also benefits Pro workflows, optimized for detail rendering in ProRAW. In addition, using machine learning models tailored for the 4-in-1 pixel sensor, iPhone can now shoot ProRAW images at 48 megapixels, showing unprecedented detail and enabling new creative workflows for professional users.

The 48-megapixel main camera's four-in-one sensor brings a boost to the Pro workflow: it's optimized for detailed rendering in the ProRAW format, allowing for unprecedented levels of detail.

Additional upgrades and features for the Pro camera system include:

  • The new 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (with a unit pixel size of 1.4 microns) delivers sharper and more detailed images, taking the already powerful macro photography performance to the next level.
  • The optimized telephoto camera provides 3x optical zoom.
  • The new TrueDepth camera with Æ’/1.9 aperture improves photography performance in low-light environments. With autofocus for the first time, the TrueDepth camera can focus faster in low-light environments and take selfies from farther away.
  • The new Adaptive True Tone flash has been completely redesigned with a 9 LED array that changes the flash mode based on the user-selected focal length.
  • Powerful computational photography benefits like Night Mode, Smart HDR 4, Portrait Mode with Portrait Lighting, Night Mode Portrait, Photography Styles that bring personalized color to every photo, Apple ProRAW, and more.
  • The new Sports mode captures incredibly smooth video, dealing with large shakes, displacements, and vibrations, even when shooting in motion.
  • Movie effect mode now supports 4K 30 fps and 4K 24 fps video capture.
  • Pro-level video workflows, including ProRes3 and end-to-end Dolby Vision HDR workflows.

Car accident detection

All models in the iPhone 14 series introduce unprecedented safety features to provide emergency assistance when it matters most. iPhone's car crash detection features a new dual-core accelerometer that can detect up to 256 g-forces and a high dynamic range gyroscope to detect severe car crashes and automatically make emergency calls if the user is unconscious or unable to reach the iPhone. These capabilities are based on existing components such as barometers, which are now used to detect changes in air pressure inside the cabin; GPS brings in more data on speed changes, and microphones are able to identify the characteristic loud noises of car crashes. Advanced motion algorithms designed by Apple have been trained on more than one million hours of real-world driving and crash recording data to further improve accuracy. When used with the Apple Watch, the car accident detection feature seamlessly combines the unique advantages of both devices to help users get help effectively. When a major car accident is detected, the Apple Watch will display the emergency services call interface on the screen, as the device is likely to be closer to the user, and if the iPhone is nearby, the call will be made from the iPhone to maintain the highest possible connection quality.

Crash Detection utilizes specialized components and Apple-designed algorithms to detect serious car crashes and automatically make emergency calls if the user is unconscious or unable to reach the iPhone.
