China: The number of mobile IoT connections in China has reached 1.698 billion

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the economic operation of the communications industry from January to August 2022. In addition to the steady growth of telecommunication business revenue and the rapid growth of the total telecommunication business volume, new progress has been made in the construction and application of new infrastructures such as 5G, gigabit optical networks and the Internet of Things, and the number of mobile Internet of Things connections has exceeded the number of mobile phone users for the first time.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of the end of August, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom had a total of 1.678 billion mobile phone users, a net increase of 34.68 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, 5G mobile phone users reached 492 million, a net increase of 138 million compared with the end of the previous year, accounting for 29.4% of the mobile phone users, an increase of 7.8 percentage points compared with the end of the previous year.


As of the end of August, the three basic telecommunications companies had developed 1.698 billion cellular IoT end users , a net increase of 300 million over the end of the previous year. The number of cellular IoT end users representing "things" connections in mobile network connection terminals exceeded the number representing "people" for the first time. "The number of connected mobile phone users has reached 50.3%. The total number of IPTV (Internet TV) users reached 370 million, a net increase of 21.9 million over the end of the previous year.

A report by Strategy Analytics stated that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the Internet of Things will reach 14% during the period 2022-2030. During the forecast period, North America and the Asia Pacific are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% and 14%, respectively.
