China/Hong Kong/Macau version of Apple iPhone 14/Pro series does not support satellite communication

At the "Far Out" conference held early this morning, Apple released the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, retaining most of the iPhone 13's design - including for mobile phones Notches for the selfie camera and Face ID sensor. Apple also introduced the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, with a "smart island" pill screen to show alerts and background activity, brighter displays and AOD always-on display, A16 bionic chip, new color options, and more.

At the press conference, Apple announced that the iPhone 14 series supports satellite communication and SOS emergency contact. Satellite communications are free for the first two years and will be available in the US and Canada first in November. However, Apple also made a special note here:

  • To use emergency SOS via satellite, users need an iPhone 14 model. A software update to iOS 16 in November 2022 is also required
  • Need to be used in places without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Emergency SOS via satellite is only available in the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and Canada
  • International travelers visiting the U.S. and Canada can use Emergency SOS via satellite, except for mobile versions purchased in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau
  • Emergency SOS via satellite is not available for iPhone models purchased in Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau
  • Additionally, emergency SOS service via satellite is not available in Guam or American Samoa
  • Emergency SOS via satellite may not work above 62° latitude, such as northern Canada and Alaska
The US version of the iPhone 14 series supports the long-rumored emergency messages sent via communication satellites, called emergency SOS. When the user is not within range of the cell phone signal, the cell phone's antenna can be connected to satellite communications. By customizing the short text compression algorithm, the size of the message can be reduced by 3 times. In the case of seeing a clear sky, the time to send a message is less than 15 seconds. Satellite location sharing is supported. In field scenes, emergency rescue and other fields, The satellite communication function can perform certain functions. You can also use the Find My app to share a location without sending a message.
