Ericsson and MediaTek Announce First Completion of 5G Enhanced Technology R&D Trial 5G LAN Functional Technology Trial

Ericsson China announced that on September 28, 2022, under the guidance of the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group, Ericsson and MediaTek were the first to complete the 5G enhancement technology R&D test 5G LAN function technology test.

According to reports, 3GPP began to study and formulate 5G LAN specifications from the R16 version, so that 5G networks can support industrial network Ethernet communications, and at the same time have the ability of local area network services to promote 5G network support for industrial communications.

This technical test mainly focuses on the 3GPP R16 version, including the 5G LAN function test and service test. The functional test mainly includes the three basic functional requirements of 5G VN group management, 5G LAN PDU session management, and 5G LAN user plane management, which respectively verify the static management and dynamic management functions of 5G VN group, PDU session management, and N4 session management, And support for 5G LAN based on three different user plane traffic forwarding methods based on UPF local communication, N6 interface communication, and N19 interface communication.

In this technical test, Ericsson provided core network and base station equipment supporting 5G LAN, and MediaTek provided test terminals supporting 5G LAN. Ericsson successfully completed all test items for 5G LAN functions based on Ethernet PDUs, fully validating the 5G core network's support for 5G VN group management, 5G LAN PDU session management, and 5G LAN user plane management functions. At the same time, through DHCP service, multicast video playback service, etc., it is verified that the terminal supporting 5G LAN can realize point-to-point communication, multicast, and broadcast, and can fully support the demand of local area network in vertical industry application scenarios.

Ericsson and MediaTek have cooperated many times before. In August last year, MediaTek and Ericsson successfully completed the 5G mmWave-based four-carrier aggregation uplink test, achieving a peak uplink rate of 495Mbps.
