MegaFon launches federal VoWiFi network

The MegaFon operator announced that it was the first in Russia to introduce equipment for Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) technology in all regions of the country. With its help, subscribers can make and receive regular voice calls over Wi-Fi wherever the penetration of a cellular network signal is difficult. According to the company, VoWiFi technology is especially relevant for new residential complexes, where there are still not enough base stations for high-quality network coverage, basements, and other places that are hard to reach for a cellular signal. The technology allows you to use any Wi-Fi router with Internet access as a base station, and it was possible to achieve high-quality voice calls thanks to the use of Enhanced Voice Service and WB-AMR speech codecs.

MegaFon launched VoWiFi in 2020 from Moscow, and within two years the technology became available to residents of other Russian regions. VoWiFi works on more than 450 smartphone models, including devices from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Realme, and other manufacturers. To use the service, the smartphone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network with Internet access and the VoWiFi function activated in the settings. The use of technology does not affect the cost of services, the operator notes, that VoWiFi calls consume minutes from tariff packages. Connection is possible with subscribers of any operators.
