Sony's first full-frame interchangeable lens remote control gimbal movie machine ILME-FR7 released

Sony (China) Co., Ltd. officially released the new film camera system ILME-FR7. According to Sony, this is Sony's first remote-controlled pan-tilt movie camera that integrates an interchangeable lens design, a full-frame image sensor, and built-in pan/tilt/zoom functions. The FR7 combines remote shooting capabilities and cinematic image quality, providing more possibilities for the creation of many reality shows and other shows and movies.

Sony said that the full-frame image sensor combined with Sony's rich E-mount lens group, combined with the flexible zoom and multi-angle shooting capabilities of PTZ control, make the ILME-FR7 no longer limited by position and space. Not only does the ILME-FR7 deliver the cinematic image quality and professional handling, it further pushes the boundaries of the video production industry with its versatile connectivity and efficient performance in multi-camera workflows. Over the past two years, the need for remote shooting and content production in tight spaces has skyrocketed, and the FR7's PTZ and cinematic features easily meet both of those needs.

The ILME-FR7 uses a full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with approximately 10.3 million effective pixels and supports a dynamic range of 15+ levels. It is Sony's first PTZ camera that integrates the above functions.

The FR7 supports many of the features of Sony's cinema camera system for a great cinematic look, including:

  • The sensitivity can be expanded to ISO 409600 when shooting in a low-light environment.
  • 15+ stops of dynamic range for smooth highlights and low noise performance.
  • Supports picture profile selection, including S-Cinetone for natural mid-tones, capable of restoring natural skin tones, recording soft colors, and smooth highlights. Preset picture profiles to help the production team save more time in post-production. In Cine EI mode, Base ISO can be set to ISO 800 or ISO 12800 to match different lighting conditions and reduce noise while maintaining the same preset. This mode supports color spaces such as Sony's S-Log3 gamma, wide gamut S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3, Cine, making it ideal for post-production.
  • Support 4K 120p6 upscale shooting, presenting the emotional expression required for a cinematic feel in slow motion.
  • In terms of price, the ILME-FR7 Sony remote control gimbal movie machine will be launched in early November 2022, with a suggested retail price of RMB 65,000; the suggested retail price of the ILME-FR7K (SELP28135G single-lens set) is RMB 82,000.
