The world's first automatic production line of lithium metal batteries was launched in Hefei, Anhui

With the continuous development of electric vehicles, the electric vehicle-related industries are also making rapid progress. According to a report by Hefei's official Weibo account today, at the "Lithium Metal Battery Innovation Technology Forum" of the 2022 National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week series held in Hefei yesterday, Mengwei Technology's lithium metal battery automated manufacturing line located in Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone And the z21 Innovation Lab was officially opened.

This is the first dedicated production line for automated lithium metal battery manufacturing in China and even in the world, and it is also another major progress in large-scale mass production by China's independent research and development of a new generation of power battery technology enterprises. Professor Zhang Yuegang of Tsinghua University said at the event that with the transformation and upgrading of global energy, the requirements for battery energy density are constantly increasing. As an important development direction of innovative breakthrough technologies in the current battery industry, lithium metal batteries are expected to more than double the cruising range of electric vehicles in the future.

Professor Zhang Yuegang said that the full opening of the automatic manufacturing line of Lithium Metal Battery of Mengwei Technology shows that China's batch delivery capacity of 500 Wh/kg of high-end energy-based power battery products has taken the leading position in the world, realizing the realization of lithium metal batteries from the laboratory. Breakthrough from the stage (TRL3) to the product batch delivery stage (TRL6-8).

Public information shows that lithium batteries can be roughly divided into two categories: lithium metal batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Among them, the lithium metal battery was first proposed and studied by Gilbert N. Lewis in 1912. Its safety, specific capacity, self-discharge rate, and performance-to-price ratio are superior to lithium-ion batteries, but due to its own high technical requirements, only a few companies in several countries are producing such lithium metal batteries.
