Apple iOS 16 castrated AirPlay support for old Apple TV

Apple turned to the era of software streaming, Apple’s classic products were abandoned, and many models from 10 years ago have become outdated products, but in fact, there are still many users. Using an old Apple TV.

Existing users have reported that users who are still using older Apple TVs are best not to upgrade to iOS 16 because Apple has abandoned one of the most useful features - video projection.

After installing the iOS 16 update, you can no longer use AirPlay to cast streaming content from your iPhone to your Apple TV (casting photos does not affect), and this only affects second and third-generation Apple TVs released in 2010 and 2012 TV.

As iCreate points out, this setting appears to mostly affect DRM-restricted content, but this includes nearly every streaming service out there today, including Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Hulu, and more. IT House learned that on Reddit, many second-generation Apple TV and third-generation Apple TV users had a heated discussion around this issue.

If you try to AirPlay a movie or TV show from one of these services to your Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3, you'll see a vague error: "Error loading this content. Try again later." However, users tested with iOS 15.7 devices and found that AirPlay still works on Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3, even with the aforementioned DRM-restricted content.

Similarly, many services have gradually dropped support for their older Apple TVs in recent months, including YouTube, CBS All Access, Crunchyroll, and MLB At Bat, among others. It’s worth mentioning that when these apps stopped, the companies pointed out that users could use AirPlay as a solution, but now with the arrival of iOS 16, this has completely blocked the way for old users to watch TV.

But the good news is that the third-generation Apple TV released in 2016 still supports the service. But in any case, Apple quietly removed support for key features like AirPlay, and users said they seemed to be missing something, which seems to be a very disappointing thing for these users.
