Ericsson and India Telecom to build long-term 5G SA network

Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson said on Monday that it has signed a long-term 5G Strategic Standalone (SA) network deployment agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm.

This is the first collaboration between Jio and Ericsson on the deployment of a radio access network in the country. The telecom market leader has partnered with South Korea's Samsung to build a 4G network.

Ericsson said it will deploy its 5G radio access network (RAN) products and solutions, as well as E-band microwave mobile transmission solutions, for Jio's fifth-generation network.

Besides Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung, Jio is also said to be working with US network equipment maker Cisco on its 5G network.

The telco has launched a "true 5G" test service in four cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi. Jio aims to have 5G available in every town, every autonomous district, every borough, etc. by December 2023.

Ookla analysis shows that Jio's 5G performance depends on the spectrum band it uses. The C-band (n=78) performance was between a median download speed of 606.53Mbps and 875.26Mbps. 5G networks using the 700MHz band (n=28), on the other hand, provided median download speeds below 100Mbps, ranging between 78.69Mbps and 95.13Mbps.
