Ni Guangnan: Embrace open source and vigorously promote RISC-V ecological construction

Recently, Ni Guangnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, wrote in the special issue of the digital world that China's chip industry has always been controlled by others in the "mainstream CPU" architecture. Vision actively plans the development of China's chip industry.

In the PC and Internet era, x86 architecture chips have an advantage. In the mobile Internet era, ARM architecture chips have an advantage. In the future, we will enter the era of the Internet of Everything, and the CPU technology architecture pattern will also change accordingly. Ni Guangnan said that at present, a variety of domestic CPU architectures coexist in China, which may cause resource dispersion and low-level repetition in the future. If this situation cannot be changed in time, in a few years, China will lack a CPU architecture that can compete with both x86 and ARM in the global market, and thus will remain at the mercy of others in terms of "mainstream CPUs".

To this end, when my country develops the chip industry, it is necessary to plan and think about the technical route for the development of the domestic CPU architecture from a global perspective. At present, there are roughly two ideas for domestic CPU technology routes, which are worth discussing: one idea is to "go it alone", which has the advantage of being easier to achieve autonomous control and can meet the needs of several domestic application fields. However, in order to compete with the above-mentioned "mainstream CPU" in the world market, my country's CPU still has a big gap in terms of technology, especially in terms of ecology, and this situation cannot be changed in a short period of time by subjective wishes. . Another idea is to "follow the crowd". That is, following the foreign architecture, the advantage is that it can use the mature ecology, but the disadvantage is that it is difficult to achieve autonomy and control, and it is difficult to avoid various sanctions and restrictions.

The emergence of open-source RISC-V is in line with the needs of a new generation of information technology in the future. The RISC-V simplified instruction set adopts the open-source model. Its advanced architecture, easy customization, convenient personnel training, and short R&D cycle greatly reduce the threshold of the chip industry, which makes its subsequent development have strong vitality. Ni Guangnan suggested that China should seize the development opportunity of the new generation of information technology, face the "mainstream CPU" market in the intelligent era, and focus on the open source RISC-V architecture to develop China's chip industry. Make good use of the open source model, give full play to China's national system, super-large market advantages, and talent advantages, concentrate efforts and coordinate research, vigorously develop and expand the RISC-V industrial ecology, and increase contributions to the RISC-V open source community to increase the community's voice.

Ni Guangnan also said that basic software is the core element for integrating the diverse ecology of RISC-V, and it is the core competitiveness of the industry based on the RISC-V architecture. Historically, the x86 ecosystem has achieved Microsoft and Red Hat, the ARM ecosystem has achieved Apple and Google, and RISC-V will also provide a new stage for future software giants. For this reason, my country needs to deploy RISC-V basic software early and comprehensively.
