Toshiba Announces 20TB MG10 Series HDDs

Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") announced the launch of a 20TB high-capacity conventional magnetic recording (CMR) mechanical hard disk - MG10. The 20TB MG10 series features a 10-platter helium-filled hermetic design that utilizes Toshiba's Magnetic Energy Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology to increase storage capacity.

Compared to Toshiba's previous 18TB model, the 20TB MG10 series of conventional magnetic recording (CMR) hard drives have an 11.1% increase in capacity, are well compatible with a wide range of applications and operating systems and can accommodate both random and sequential reads and writes of mixed workloads, suitable for cloud-scale and traditional data center applications. The drives feature a 7,200rpm spin rate, 550TB/year workload rating, optional SATA and SAS interfaces, energy-efficient helium sealing, and an industry-standard 3.5-inch drive form factor.

The 20TB MG10 series further demonstrates Toshiba's commitment to advancing the design of mechanical hard drives to meet the growing demand for storage devices in cloud-scale servers and object and file storage infrastructures. With improved energy efficiency and increased capacity, the 20TB MG10 series reduces capital expenditures and optimizes TCO (total cost of ownership) by helping to increase storage density in cloud-scale infrastructure. As data storage requirements continue to rapidly increase, the 20TB MG10 series employs Magnetic Energy Control - Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) to assist cloud-scale service providers and storage solution designers to provide Rack-scale storage enables higher storage density.
