Leaked Samsung Galaxy S23 / Ultra will be equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip

The newly released Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip adopts the new 1+2+2+3 architecture, and some smartphones equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have appeared on the Geekbench benchmark website, including The Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra, which show a Prime CPU core frequency of 3.36GHz, a performance core frequency of 2.80GHz and an efficiency core frequency of 2.02GHz.

The Samsung S23 series, the Vivo X90 Pro, and the iQOO 11 are also equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, but the Prime core frequency of these phones is 3.19GHz. This is also the official value announced by Qualcomm, 3.1872GHz to be exact.

Recently, digital blogger @Ice Universe said that the European version of the Samsung S23 series will use the "exclusive high-frequency version" of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. However, the benchmarks we've seen so far are from US-version models, so this could relate to S23 devices worldwide.

Now that more details are exposed, the Prime CPU core frequency of the Samsung S23 series will indeed reach 3.36GHz instead of 3.2GHz. But the GPU is also running at a higher frequency of 719MHz, which is higher than the standard 680MHz announced by Qualcomm.

Qualcomm occasionally releases "AC" versions, which run at a higher than the chip's base clock frequency. For example, the model number of the Snapdragon 855 is SM8150, and the SM8150-AC is the Snapdragon 855+, which boosts the Prime core from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 model announced this week is SM8550-AB, so the follow-up overclocked version is SM8550-AC.

It's unclear if the chip, used in Samsung's Galaxy S23 series, will be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2+ or something else. But it seems that Qualcomm and TSMC have achieved decent overclocking from the technical side.

According to official data from Qualcomm, the CPU of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is 35% faster than that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and the GPU is 25% faster. Given the overclocking of both, the new version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip will be even faster.
