Tata Group is negotiating with Wistron to acquire its Indian iPhone factory for US$600 million

People familiar with the matter said today that India’s Tata Group is negotiating with Wistron, an Apple iPhone OEM, hoping to pay up to 50 billion rupees (approximately 612.6 million U.S. dollars) to acquire Wistron’s only manufacturing plant in India.

Tata Group may also consider setting up a joint venture with Wistron if it fails to reach an acquisition agreement with Wistron, these people said. Wistron is one of Apple's largest suppliers in India, with a factory in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

Currently, Tata Electronics, a division of the Tata Group, is already supplying components to Apple. In September this year, it was reported that Tata Group was negotiating with Wistron to form a joint venture to assemble iPhones in India.

Tata Group, Wistron, and Apple have yet to comment on today's report.
