TSMC plans to spend billions to expand Arizona factory

People familiar with the matter said that chip maker TSMC is preparing to invest billions of dollars more to build a factory in Arizona. TSMC plans to announce in the next few months that it will build a cutting-edge semiconductor factory north of Phoenix, Arizona, next to another chip factory the company announced in 2020, according to people familiar with the matter. The investment is expected to be roughly the same size as the $12 billion pledged two years ago.

In May 2020, TSMC announced that it would invest $12 billion to build a new fab in Arizona, USA. Construction of the plant started in June 2021 and is expected to start production in 2024.

The Arizona factory announced by TSMC in 2020 is expected to use the 5nm process technology to manufacture wafers for related customers, with a monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers, including Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Apple.
