TSMC responded to $12 billion investment in new 3nm plant in the United States

TSMC said today that it has not yet determined the plan for the second phase of the Arizona wafer fab. In light of strong customer demand for the company's advanced processes, we will evaluate future plans in terms of operational efficiency and cost economics.

TSMC said the Arizona fab, which is currently under construction, contains a portion of the building that may be used for the second phase of the plant, which will improve cost-effectiveness by utilizing resources being constructed concurrently in the first phase. The building will allow the company to maintain flexibility for future expansion.

In May 2020, TSMC announced that it would invest $12 billion to build a new fab in Arizona, USA. Construction of the plant started in June 2021 and is expected to start production in 2024.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier today that TSMC plans to announce in the next few months that it will build a cutting-edge semiconductor factory north of Phoenix, Arizona, adjacent to another chip factory the company announced in 2020.
