Microsoft Surface Duo / Duo 2 with Windows 11 ushers in new drivers

DuoWOA project creator Gustave Monce released a new set of drivers for Microsoft Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 smartphones. These drivers integrate mobile hardware with desktop operating systems, and better adapt Microsoft's dual-screen smartphones to Windows PCs. Driver version 2212.12 brings charging support, improved brightness control, compatibility with more sensors, and various fixes.

Here's what's new on Surface Duo

Charging is finally supported for use under Windows, and this is the first version of the charging stack, so it's currently limited in a few ways. Work is still in progress, the charging input is limited to low current for safety.

  • Added driver for Qualcomm SMB1380 secondary charger.
  • Added drivers for Qualcomm PM8150B metering and primary charger.
  • Enables content adaptive brightness levels.
  • Added pedometer sensor support for Surface Duo.
  • Added light fusion sensor support for Surface Duo.
  • The new tablet gesture experience is now enabled by default on Surface Duo. Expect more tablet-optimized taskbars, bigger hit targets in Microsoft Edge/File Explorer, and more.
  • Fixed some issues with duplicated sensors.
  • Smooth brightness control for both panels is enabled.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents USB functional mode from working. This primarily affects USB file transfers using a computer.
  • Update the Surface Duo firmware to the latest Android OTA release in November.
  • Long-forgotten bug fixes and enhancements.
  • Call configuration is in progress and users may need to manually configure call features if calling is not currently working. (Same as Lumia 950 series).

When it comes to the Surface Duo 2, its current Windows support is more limited than its predecessor.

  • Addresses an issue that prevents USB functional mode from working. This issue primarily affects USB file transfers using a computer.
  • Update the Surface Duo 2 firmware to November's latest Android OTA release.
  • Call provisioning is in progress and users may need to manually configure call features if calling is not currently working. (Same as Lumia 950 series).

Getting Surface Duo sensors to work with the new Windows 11 drivers requires sensor calibration and UEFI updates to 2212.12 or later. Also, be aware of the following known issues.

  • Auto Orientation only works on the left panel, using the orientation sensor on the right panel.
  • USB Dongles without external power may not work at this time.
  • USB-C Billboard devices are currently not working.
  • External display stream support is currently not working.
  • Other information provided by the attitude sensor is currently out of stock in public preview, this includes peek events.
  • The digitizer will not respond to the folding of the device.
  • The display does not respond to the folding of the device in most cases.
  • The physical device data is incorrect.
  • The digitizer is not calibrated correctly.

If users don't want to toss, Microsoft's dual-screen smartphone Surface Duo and Duo 2 have pushed the Android 12L system, bringing a Windows 11-like style design, making Microsoft's smartphone look more similar to the desktop operating system.
