Brazil Expects to Achieve 5G Coverage in More Than 1,600 Areas by 2023

Brazil's regulatory agency, Anatel, has announced that it expects to open 5G networks in the 3.5GHz band in approximately 1,610 regions by the end of 2023. The decision was made after receiving the green light from EAF and Gaispi, the technical group that oversees the rollout of 5G and interference with free satellite services in adjacent blocks of the 3.5GHz band.

Expanding 5G Coverage

Currently, 140 cities covering 38.5 percent of the population have been approved to receive 5G in the 3.5GHz band, according to Anatel. On Tuesday, Anatel granted licenses to use the frequency band in another 78 cities near state capitals or with populations of more than 500,000, allowing mobile operators to activate the network there.

This is a significant expansion of 5G coverage in Brazil, as it will bring the technology to more remote areas and smaller cities. It will also provide a boost to the country's economy, as 5G networks have the potential to bring about significant improvements in areas such as healthcare, transportation, and education.

Anatel President Carlos Baigorri said in a recent interview that regulators are looking to activate 5G early in as many places as possible. However, early activation is at the operator's discretion. This means that while the licenses have been granted, it is up to the mobile operators to decide when and how they want to roll out the 5G networks in these areas.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the positive outlook for 5G in Brazil, there are still several challenges that need to be addressed. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of infrastructure in certain areas. In order to roll out 5G networks, operators will need to invest in new infrastructure such as cell towers and fiber-optic networks.

Another challenge is the lack of spectrum availability. 5G networks require a lot of spectrum in order to operate effectively, and there is a limited amount of spectrum available in the 3.5GHz band. This could cause problems for operators who are trying to roll out 5G networks in areas where there is a lot of competition for spectrum.
