China: The mandatory national standard Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure Limits of Mobile Communication Terminals was officially released

The Chinese government has released a new national standard to ensure the safety of mobile communication terminals. GB21288-2022 "Limits of Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure of Mobile Communication Terminals" has been jointly compiled by the China Academy of Information and Communications and the China Institute of Metrology. This standard will be officially implemented on January 1, 2024 and aims to better protect the health of the public.

The release of this standard is a positive step in promoting the healthy development of the communications industry. With the increasing use of mobile phones and other electronic devices, it is important to ensure that the levels of electromagnetic radiation exposure are within safe limits. This will help to reduce the potential health risks associated with prolonged use of these devices.

The Chinese government has demonstrated its commitment to protecting the health of its citizens by releasing this mandatory national standard. It is important for all manufacturers and users of mobile communication terminals to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of their products.

The newly released GB21288-2022 "Limits for Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation of Mobile Communication Terminals" is a revised version of the previous standard, GB21288-2007. The revision process took four years to ensure that the updated standard reflects the latest scientific research achievements in the field of bioelectromagnetics and meets the needs of new technologies in the communication industry.

This revised standard aims to provide updated guidelines for safe exposure levels to electromagnetic radiation for mobile communication terminals. With the rapid evolution of technology and the increasing reliance on electronic devices, it is important to ensure that the levels of electromagnetic radiation exposure are within safe limits to protect the health of users.

The revised GB21288-2022 standard will be officially implemented on January 1, 2024 and it is important for manufacturers and users of mobile communication terminals to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of their products.

The revised edition of GB21288-2022 "Limits for Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation of Mobile Communication Terminals" has made several important updates compared to the 2007 edition. The name of the standard has been changed from "Limits of Local Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation of Mobile Phones" to "Limits of Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation of Mobile Communication Terminals" to reflect the expanded scope of the standard. The scope of application has been expanded to include all mobile communication terminal devices that work within the frequency range of 100kHz to 300GHz and are within 20cm of the human body when in use, such as mobile phones, cordless PBXs, satellite mobile terminals, wearable devices, and portable mobile terminals.

In addition, the revised edition has added the definition of occupational exposure and absorbed power density. It has also increased the exposure limits applicable to different frequencies and different body parts. The marked content in the product manual has been modified and notes have been added to the requirements of the product manual.

Electromagnetic radiation testing is a critical requirement for various countries and regions to ensure the safety of electronic devices. In China, the terminal laboratory of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology is responsible for inspecting the levels of electromagnetic radiation entering the network. This laboratory is a leader in the field, serving as the chairman or active member of international electromagnetic radiation standard groups such as ITU, IEC, and IEEE. It is also the chairman unit of the domestic industry standard group and plays a key role in the development of international and domestic standards for wireless communication electromagnetic radiation limits, test methods, and other related guidelines.

The release of the GB21288-2022 "Limits for Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation of Mobile Communication Terminals" standard is a testament to the expertise and dedication of the terminal laboratory in ensuring the safety of electronic devices. The implementation of this standard on January 1, 2024 will help to promote the healthy development of the communication industry and protect the health of users. It is important for all manufacturers and users of mobile communication terminals to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of their products.
