Amazon AWS Launches Two New Instances Supported by Graviton3 Chip

Amazon AWS has announced the launch of two new instances, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) M7g and Amazon EC2 R7g, which are powered by a new generation of self-developed chip Amazon Graviton3. This chip is capable of delivering up to 25% better performance than the current best performance instance in the Amazon EC2 series.

M7g Instances Suitable for General-Purpose Workloads

The M7g instances are designed to cater to general-purpose workloads such as application servers, microservices, game servers, medium-sized data stores, and cache queues. These instances are equipped with DDR5 memory that increases memory bandwidth by 50% compared to the previous generations of instances using DDR4 memory. Additionally, M7g instances have built-in security features such as always-on memory encryption, dedicated cache per vCPU, and support for Pointer Authentication.

R7g Instances Suitable for Memory-Intensive Workloads

On the other hand, the R7g instances are suitable for memory-intensive workloads such as open-source databases, in-memory caching, and real-time big data analytics. These instances are also equipped with DDR5 memory that increases memory bandwidth by 50% compared to the previous generations of instances using DDR4 memory. The R7g instances have built-in security features such as always-on memory encryption, dedicated cache per vCPU, and support for Pointer Authentication.

Nitro System and Enhanced Networking

Both M7g and R7g instances are built on the Amazon Nitro System, which is a combination of dedicated hardware and lightweight software. This system delivers high-performance networking and storage while also providing enhanced security features. The instances also support encrypted Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes, which protect data at rest on volumes, data moving between instances and volumes, snapshots created on volumes, and volumes created from those snapshots.

EBS-optimized Network Connection

In addition, both M7g and R7g instances are EBS-optimized, which means that they have a dedicated network connection between the instance and the EBS volume. This connection delivers high-performance data transfer and minimizes the impact of network contention. These instances also support enhanced networking, which provides higher packet per second (PPS) performance, lower network jitter, and lower latency.

Availability and Saving Plan Forms

The M7g and R7g instances are now available in the US East (N. Virginia) region. Customers can purchase them through On-Demand, Spot, and Saving Plan forms. The Saving Plan forms provide flexibility and cost savings by allowing customers to commit to a consistent amount of usage for a one-year or three-year term.
