China Mobile, ZTE and Huawei Successfully Test RedCap for 5G Core Network

China Mobile Research Institute, in collaboration with industry partners ZTE and Huawei, has completed an end-to-end infield test and verification of RedCap for 5G core network. The aim of this test was to accelerate the development of RedCap technology and lay a strong foundation for commercial deployment. According to the official news release, this test will also help 5G empower vertical industries by providing reference and guidance for the industry's next product development.

Understanding RedCap Technology

The 3GPP R17 standard protocol defines RedCap (Reduced Capability) as a key technology for medium and high-speed IoT scenarios, which includes wearable devices, industrial wireless sensors, and video surveillance. RedCap extends the application of 5G IoT and can achieve an effective balance in cost, bandwidth, power consumption, and other aspects.

China Mobile's Role in Developing RedCap

China Mobile Research Institute led the formulation of technical specifications such as TS 23.501, 23.502, 24.501, 23.122, and 24.008 for 3GPP SA2/SA5/CT and other standard topics in the early stage. The institute then introduced RedCap technology to the network architecture, network element functions, operation and maintenance, etc. and conducted technical experiments focusing on two aspects to facilitate the maturity and rapid commercialization of the RedCap industry.

Testing RedCap Technology

The end-to-end infield test of RedCap for 5G core network focused on two aspects. First, the test conducted end-to-end verification of basic functions such as initial registration, interoperability, access control, and PDU session establishment of RedCap to ensure the basic service experience of RedCap user access. The second aspect focused on conducting compatibility tests on five scenarios, including no upgrade of all network elements, upgrade of some network elements, and no upgrade of all network elements, to realize a comprehensive evaluation of the initial state, intermediate state, and target state of RedCap network deployment evolution.

Commercial Feasibility of RedCap

China Mobile stated that the end-to-end infield test of RedCap for 5G core network has initially verified the commercial feasibility of RedCap in 2B and 2C networks. This test provides reference and guidance for the industry's next product development and will help to speed up the supplementary lack of Internet of Things access and network capabilities in medium and high-speed scenarios.

Implications of RedCap Technology for 5G IoT

RedCap technology extends the application of 5G IoT and can achieve an effective balance in cost, bandwidth, power consumption, and other aspects. The successful end-to-end infield test of RedCap for 5G core network has laid a strong foundation for commercial deployment, and it is expected to help 5G empower vertical industries. The technology will enable the development of wearable devices, industrial wireless sensors, and video surveillance, among other things, in medium and high-speed scenarios.
